Care of the inner channel of the instrument
In order to maintain good sound quality and prevent the appearance of cracks, the instrument must be regularly treated with special oil. The purpose of lubrication is to protect the inner channel of the instrument from excess moisture. Usually, one or two lubrications per year are enough, but it depends on the wood, the way it was pre-treated, the duration and intensity of playing the instrument. Instruments made by us are pre-boiled in paraffin, so it is not necessary to lubricate them. However, after one or two years of usage, this will not harm, but will only help the wood to remain high-quality.
- Which oil should be used? Good for lubricating wood is almond oil, which due to its structure does not leave sticky residues and penetrates well into the smallest crevices of wood, forming a film that protects the flute from excessive moisture. Some performers also use linseed oil. However, it is quite difficult to handle, as it creates a tarry residue that is difficult to remove, and it deteriorates very quickly (deteriorated oil can be recognized by its unpleasant smell).
- How to properly lubricate a flute? Before lubricating the instrumnet, it must be well dried. Lubricating the lower knee is quite simple. To do this, you need to wet the inner part of the flute with a few drops of oil and rub it evenly along the inner channel with the help of a special cleaning stick and a piece of cloth (see step-by-step instructions). After that, look at the result of your work: if matte spots are still visible inside, repeat the process until the flute is covered with an even layer of oil.
You should be especially careful with the head of the tool – the oil should not get on the block. To do this, hold the head with the whistle to the top, so that the oil does not get into the intake channel.
So remember:
- Before lubrication, dry the instrument well;
- During lubrication – always keep your head vertical;
- If possible, avoid contact between the oil and the block;
- Make sure that the oil does not get into the intake channel.
